Steering racks....yuck!

24 years of crud built up, seized fasteners, grease up to my elbows and clothes that will never be good for anything aside from another rack replacement, yep, I got all the boxes checked.
I read through a bunch of old posts, trying to put together in my head some ways to ease the suffering. My ideas were of no use as I ended up aborting the possibility of this being made a tolerable job.
The one thing that I did get to sidestep was fussing with the hydraulic lines. When I purchased the rack I also opted for new lines, as I was concerned they might prove non-salvageable. Well, I took a wrench to the return line and guess what. It was seized. The best I could do with a wrench was to round it off. Cue the hacksaw blade. I just cut the lines, which was actually pretty easy. About a minute's worth of short strokes with a loose blade knicks the line enough so that a little wiggling busts it right out. I did this after the rack had been freed from its mounts and rotated a bit. If you are reading this post looking for clues on the job, buy new lines and just cut the old ones out. Seriously, it took five minutes.
Anyhow, the worst part of the job is out of the way. I can now finish cleaning the area, package up my core for return. It'll be nice to get that $110 back and forget about my power steering for a while!
Dirty, nasty, filthy job it was!!!
