Congratulations on the purchase - one of my favorite 900s was an '88 turbo. A new C900 in the family is always a good thing.
Look at the starter as a last resort.
Check the battery voltage. If it's not where it ought to be, the problem is probably in the charging system.
If so, it's probably one of a few things:
- The famous frayed ground wire
- The famous voltage regulator brushes worn below the service limit.
- Bad battery
- Corroded battery cable connectors
Give it a jump to get it started, turn the lights and a/c (if it works), rev it a bit, and test the voltage between the alternator case and the battery. Under ideal conditions the voltage difference would be zero. But, since cars are not ideal, you should see about .5 volts or so. If it's any more, you'll want to put on an auxiliary ground wire between the alternator and a/c compressor. It's a good idea to have one anyway.
If, when you start it, you see a slightly-glowing battery light, the brushes are too worn. Replace the voltage regulator or brushes.
I've had batteries go bad, too. They just stop holding charge and can strand you in places (like an interstate gas stop) when you least expect it.
There's been some discussion about corrosion of the wires going into battery connectors recently.
