In the number of years I have been reading this BB, I don't think I EVER have read anyone's account of a timing chain breaking. It used to happen on the early Saab 99 engines, with a glorified bicycle chain, but not on C900s regardless of miles.
A really common cause for timing chain noise is, hardening of the rubbery plastic pad that is fitted inside the valve cover, as part of the chain guide system. If it's that it's a cheap fix, do it at the same time as a valve cover gasket.
Yes the obvious way to install a chain if one is called for is via the roll-in method, and it would be a lot cheaper than pulling motor.
Someone on the 9000 BB last week posted about changing a timing chain after pulling the tensioner to measure its extension and finding it at about 22 mm, the max it will go, way beyond the 11mm the book calls for changing the chain at.
On your C900 the shop should be able to pull the tensioner to check its extension.
According to Anders/Swedecar, a highly experienced pro in LA who advertises and also posts on here, there are a bunch of C900s and even 99s running around with tensioners extended way beyond where Saab calls for a new chain and they're doing fine.
