This morning, the acid test ( no pun intended given the timbre of my silliness ) proved to be successful. No challenge on the warm up to wait for operating temps that lend themselves to help with the idle stability.
So, the myth is proven. "The Forgotten Connection" was the singular culprit of odd runability issues. I think that because there is a rubber boot over the coil, it tends to be overlooked or considered to be "ok" ... this was as simple as pulling the leads off and plugging them back on. But, now, I'll go back and do a more through inspection and cleanup on aisle 1 to make sure that all is good.
The other interesting thing was that I disconnected the battery this morning and so the ECU reset itself. Now, it runs even better as the ECU apparently stored operating info that compensated or tried to for the ignition fault. I don't really know if this is even possible, but I can tell that the engine is smoother, and has better behavior after 20 minutes of driving.
So, there you have it.
I'll also be interested in replacement coil suggestions. I would say that the life would nearly infinite in comparison to the car as long as it hadn't been heated up to an extraordinary level. It makes me wonder about cars that had head gasket or cooling issues, that could weaken or compromise the coil.
The one thing I can say is don't buy anything that has "Blaster" as part of the name .... one of those was on my other car, and that coil was a total piece of junk.
