My fave is the 1989 Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Wed, 10 Jun 2015 07:19:12 In Reply to: In defense of the 1986 900...., K-Saab [Profile/Gallery] , Wed, 10 Jun 2015 03:25:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've owned a 1990 and my current 1988 turbo (plus my wife's 84 and 86 900s). The 1989 has the benefit of the more advanced, self-correcting LH2.4 fueling system, with limited self-diagnostics. It also has the better 88-89 braking system (over the 1987 and earlier models) without going to the ABS system that came in 1990 or the SRS (airbags. 1987 and earlier models had the emergency brake in the front and you needed a special tool to reset the calipers to load new brake pads. I like having the e-brake in the rear to hold the car still when jacking up the front-end.
Both ABS and SRS are getting pretty old and difficult to maintain or there are questions of reliability (SRS). I think the 1989 may also have the larger pinion bearing in the transmission, but I'm not too sure about that.
The only downside I am aware of regarding the 1989 is that the power brake booster is no longer available on the aftermarket. That may hopefully change one day (more likely than a new source for ABS parts, IMHO). Until then, I'll keep a spare used one in the parts hoard.
