In my head, the '80s were a lot like the '60s for cars - nobody knew what they were doing in the '60s but they kept pushing the envelope, and the same happened again in the '80s - after we woke up from the '70s. Quantum leaps in performance delivered by unproven & experimental technologies. :) I find '80s cars very interesting because there was so much differentiation between makes and models, so many unique ways of getting it done. All three of those cars represent different takes on commuters - performance cars compromised by practicality. Or, maybe the other way around. :)
Going back over them 30 years later is fun - so many of their foibles are fixed or fixable inexpensively, allowing them to do what they were designed to do. Of course it goes without saying that the SPG needs the least remedial work by an order of magnitude, however it should be said that with shortcomings addressed the other two are pretty fierce. An XR4Ti and a Fiero with engine, suspension and brake work are pretty darned awesome vehicles. Makes me happy seeing them every morning.
