But allowing him poetic license maybe water did get in or on it.
The ECU is very well shielded by a crimped-on tin cover and a heavy aluminum heat sink-backing plate. Its connector comes up from below and there's kind of a plastic hood design to it.
It's not exactly sealed but it would seem pretty difficult for even regular leakage down past it to get inside it or affect it. And despite that one bolt hole for the bolster it's not exactly in the path of a heavy stream of rainwater.
Driven it into any lakes lately? Been cleaning up under the dash with a pressure washer or a fire hose? Did the levee break?
If it actually ran fine, even if only for a few minutes, after changing the crank sensor, maybe the crank sensor is part of the problem. Or it could be a red herring.
Did your mechanic offer any theories how water could get into the ECU?
The cure, if in fact it was water in the ECU causing trouble, is another, dry, ECU, and figuring out how the first one got wet and making sure it doesn't happen again.
System relay and fuel pump relay are right down there and if car got flooded are also suspect of having water inside.
