I would highly advise you to forget adding a hitch to a close to 30 year old 900. If you are in DC then you have two or three great options to rent a truck and trailer, saving the stress that towing a trailer would place on the car.
Normally I use Penske at any Home Depot, including Brentwood though Aspen Hill usually has more trucks available. U-Haul at Parklawn and Randolph in Rockville is another option or get a large cargo van from Enterprise. Not all Enterprise locations rent them but the one on Brookville Road on Silver Spring does.
Seriously, is it really worth the hassle to possibly damage your classic 900....trans especially, when you can spend a few hundred dollars and put the wear and tear on someone else's vehicle.
Just a thought but is what I would do in that situation. Good luck!
