The engine story has been told, lol. I have always loved euro cars starting with my first big purchase of a 1987 golf and later experience with a 1981 Rabbit convertible. My father in law introduced me to Saab with his 1986 Saab 9000 which later replaced the rabbit convertible as a responsible but fun second car and backup vehicle that could handle the demands of a young family. Unfortunately it was too far gone to save at that point and I really wanted a convertible again now that the kids were older. So i spent about a year looking for a rust free 900.(mid life crisis?). When I bought Saaby in 2013 I had an inkling that I would end up with my hands on a wrench but didn't see it coming. It took me a while to find this bulletin board and recognize the pinion whine for what it was.
A neighbor of mine who had loved these cars and had owned a classic 900 had told me that almost every time it was in the shop, the engine needed to come out. He was only joking but I had remembered it literally so I though I had better learn how to do it.
Taking the engine out gave Saaby a new reputation in the family as "my girlfriend"
The heat shield was my introduction to parts that can no longer be purchased. So I had no choice but to do something about it.
Then came the rest. The more I work on this car, the more I love the way it was assembled. Everything appears to be thoughtfully designed to be taken apart. 70's design with 80's and 90's technology.
I love the visceral feel of a hard pull on a greasy wrench, or the a sparks of metal off the grinder juxtaposed with the fine creativity of a delicate hobby project.
And then there is the evening drive on an open road or on a tree lined street, or visit to the beach. Yeah, these cars really hit every note in the chord.
