All brands of car need to have a website as helpful and authoritative as the Saabnet bulletin boards. Case in point:
I'm helping a woman friend with her 2004 Chevy Malibu, and test drove it yesterday to discover that its front brakes lock up as you drive and are dragging and heating the rotors. She only uses it for short drives and hadn't exactly noticed what was going on.
So I googled to see what I could learn.
Turns out lots of people report the same problem. But there's no clear definitive answer as to the cause or the cure.
Two or three people on various web sites suggest it's from the internal liner of the brake hoses collapsing and acting like a check valve. But there's no one on there confirming that, or reporting back at all.
Also suggested is that the e-brake on the cars is hanging up and not fully releasing. Ditto as to no feedback.
My feeling about the modern GM makes me lean toward thinking it really is the hoses. They're so focused on making cars cheap cheap cheap it wouldn't surprise me if something so basic and important is falling apart in a dangerous way while relatively new.
