Uhmm... cough cough... My only defense is that my wife had it before we met. Anyway, parking brake acts on the rear wheels of the Malibu, not front, so we can rule that out. A couple of possibilities. Either the pistons were extended for enough time that they developed some surface rust/pitting before the front pads were eventually replaced, or I have heard that this generation Malibu (and other GM cars of a similar vintage / architecture) had an issue with the rubber in the flexible line breaking down, thereby not allowing free fluid flow. Not a problem when braking, as you have the power assist, but when the pedal is released, the swollen rubber acts something like a check valve, restricting the flow back to the reservoir, causing drag. I managed to talk her into getting rid of the car before I dug too deeply into the brakes - merely replaced the pads and sold it to some sucker.... I mean made someone a good deal.
