I have an '87 SPG with 140K. I recently purchased the car. The car has a significant rattle, when warmed up, in the "sweet spot" meaning when cruising along neither accelerating nor dis-accelerating the engine rattles. In the process of investigation and up-grading the Cam, I discovered the camshaft oil tubes and fittings installed essentially with no o-rings and some damage to the plastic fittings...these were all replaced-there was no undue wear to the original cams. I also replaced the timing chain (rolled it in). Initially I assumed it was the muffler. The muffler was replaced and the exhaust pipe to motor bracket tightened to no affect. The timing chain interior guides looked good-replaced valve cover with known good guide. The rattle still remains-no change. With the car up on a lift, the sound originates at the back of the engine. When using an engine stethoscope the sound does not change when placing the tube to the motor. It was suggested to me that it might be a wrist pin and to use a heaver weight of oil which I have also tried. No difference. Soooo, I am left with what exactly?? Harmonic balancer?? Still the wrist Pin?? Thanks!
