Well, it rained all Saturday but Sunday had a few hours of relative dryness.
The springs on the convertible were longer and a bit more squirrelly to remove than SPG springs are. Because one side of the arm was lower than the other, the spring wanted to bulge out to one side.
The new(er) upper A-arm is in, including putting in new bushings, and the lower A-arm is replaced, too.
Jacking up the rear of the engine to remove the passenger side mount was easy and the A-arm only needed a little maneuvering to get it fully out and the new one installed.
Turns out that the reason the car tracked at all was that, when the A-arm failed, the shock prevented the break in the upper A-arm from getting wider by limiting the rearward travel of the drive axle.
Thanks for the guidance.
The guy I got this car was lucky that he sold it when he did, so this didn't happen to him (not to mention the bad primary shaft seal that would have let all of the transmission oil drain out, leading to a failed 5-speed and the car's final voyage to the pick-n-pull.)
