I should have inspected the upper A-arms more closely when I had the engine out earlier this year. Hindsight is 20-20, of course.
I'd never heard of upper A-arm failures other than ones being bent by collisions or encounters with massive potholes. But, looking at this one, the failure mode is obvious.
I was lucky indeed. Had the presence of mind to soft-pedal it home when the handling went funky and then go forward up the driveway instead of reverse. It would have completely given up the ghost and made a real mess if I'd backed it in.
Fortunately, the area forecast is for no rain on Satyrday and there are a few spares handy, so I know what I'll be doing in the morning. (The neighbors will be looking out their windows wondering "What is that nut doing *this* time?" .... and asking themselves .... "will the car still run after he says things like that to it?")
