RS - -

On my '89 that had bad underbody rust from being driven in New England slush and then parked in a heated garage, rear axle lines rusted and I replaced them. Then one of the rubber hoses from under the rear seat to axle blew right off the hose barb. The ferrule or crimp had entirely rusted away so no pressure there to hold it on. Then while replacing that one I just pushed the other hose and it cracked right off at the start of the barb, rust had eaten so far.

Interesting, those hose barbs aren't really barbed at all, smooth except for a small groove.

So look close at your brake hoses and if you find bad rust at that crimp then I'd recommend planning to replace them as well.

I remember only double flares on the lines along rear axle by the way. Non-ABS car.

You can buy just the buttons for double flares from NAPA by the way, maybe somewhere you can buy just the 3/16" button. Almost all modern brake line is 3/16" and all those other buttons and the other holes in the bar that clamps the end of the line are so much clutter, unless you're also flaring something massive.

I recently went to borrow-rent a double flaring tool and at both stores I tried, their tool had been used so hard it was worn out and unusable. A caution. The tip of the cone was badly rounded and the little conical dimple in the top of the button was all chewed up. A dab of grease there and on the threads at each use would have saved it, but you can't tell people how to use a rental tool.
