AND, if it is indeed by the timing cover on the firewall side that the leak is occurring of the engine oil, it is just a matter of time when the gasket fails to the point that either the oil enters the cooling system or vice versa. Somewhat depends upon what has the higher pressure, the oil or the water as to what goes where and from where....a failure is a failure, but you don't want it to happen when you are in Bumchuck Utah.
And, I'll say that 2,700 isn't in US dollars as I understand them. It's a $1000 job, but there are many other parts along the way that could be replaced, so it can be intensive on part replacement. For example, the turbo bolts are probably rusted beyond any method of removal other than die grinding them off. That is a PITA. And you have to source the bolts and find all the right hardware and gasket and pull out the broken studs in the head and replace the turbo elbow and.......at least 27 things so you don't have to go right back in there and fix something else.
So, budget $1500 and see if you can find a guy that will work with you on replacing parts along the way. Just my way of saying save the beast....
