Well, he is probably right that there is oil in the coolant from the head gasket going. I've been thinking about how the turbo oil supply could contaminate the coolant -- it would have to crack internally and then the oil would migrate to the coolant.
Did the engine have any history of overheating or other coolant related issues?
Honestly, if they aren't Saab specialists, then letting them have the job and trying to climb the learning curve could be tough. The $1000 could turn into more dough if other things are wrong, and I usually expect 27 things.
If you aren't in love with this car, but love to have a 900, then there are others out there that aren't so challenged. If it has any rust, I'd punt if you can't do the work yourself on the head. Sorry for the pragmatic approach, but one of these jobs can go south so quickly from rusted bolts breaking off in the head or trying to get the turbo off, or ? It can be an unrewarding task if you are in a bind and try to hurry the job.
