Engine Knock and Boost

Hi all,
I hated the idea of writing another base boost thread as there seem to be enough out there, so I have been avoiding it to all ends, however after a year of tinkering with my '89 900T, I am coming to you all in desperation!
I am stuck at base boost and can often hear the solenoid chatter after stepping on the gas. I've gone through just about every APC troubleshooting guide I can find, cleaned and replaced all the standard items and have come conclude the issue lies with knock. I can either unplug the knock sensor, or unscrew it and wrap it in a rag, and in both cases I get perfect boost right to the end of the yellow. As soon as I reattach the knock sensor, I'm right back to base boost. Thinking it must be the sensor, I replaced it with a new one, only to find I am still in base boost.
The car runs well and I can not hear any knocking noises while driving, so what steps can I take from here to troubleshoot this?
Thanks,
-Alex
