Hi, Long time since I've been here. Looking for some advice...
Driving a '92 900T Vert. Took on some dusty bumpy slow roads two days ago.
Next day, started fine, drove 5 miles, slow crank, and sluggish start.
Got home, can't restart as if battery dead.
Charged for ~3 hours, took to local battery shop, said battery was good (btw, <2 yrs old).
Also said alternator seemed weak.
Troubleshooting today Per Bentley:
Key off: Alternator B+ to ground = 12.45V
D+ to ground = ~0V
Key on: Alternator B+ to ground = 12.45V
D+ to ground = 1.3V
Engine Running: B+ to ground = 13.82V
D+ to ground = 14.02V
Delta = 0.2V <.7
Battery Voltages (at terminals):
Not running 12.95V
Running 13.34V
Under Load 13 (~1900RPM w/ fans, lights...)
Left charging overnight, still started sluggishly.
Other observations:
Slight fraying of B+ cable (need to replace)
Slight fraying of ground strap
Check Engine light came on briefly when starting to return from "dusty road" mentioned above. Went off after speed increased, and assumed heat related. No light currently.
I don't think the evidence is that the alternator is bad, though I should replace the cables.
I will be checking for parasitic drainage next.
Starter problems?
