A/C suddently inop - switch?

'92 900S 211K miles. Wednesday my A/C suddenly stopped. Last time I checked refrigerant was a week ago, and the level/pressure was fine. I think it's the dash panel switch but need your expert guidance. Have checked the 30A fuse, it is intact.
Coincident with the failure, the panel switch no longer stays depressed, but pops back out fully. Is this a clue?
Tried to follow the Bentley manual. With the ignition on, pressing the AC switch activates the radiator fan on the left side. The manual says I should hear the compressor clutch engaging. I heard nothing.
I know there are several protective switches in the system. But knowing the coolant level is ok, I doubt that these have tripped. How do I go about diagnosing and solving this problem?
Thanks.
