I don't drive the SPG as much as I used to - no specific reason, but a combination of factors. After the fuel pump retrofit last weekend, I obviously needed to put some road under the tires so today it's taking me around town, running errands and seeing clients.
It's a sunny 70 degrees here, so windows down, sunroof open, a little heat on the feet and it's a great day for motoring. While cruising down the freeway it occurred to me how sorry I feel for people who have never loved a c900. People who couldn't understand its looks, people who couldn't see past the "unreliable" or "quirky" stereotyping, people who never had the courage to not get an E30. It makes me sad. The c900 is such a wonderful piece of engineering, a true standout of innovation and ingenuity it's terrible to think of how many people just never got it.
I've owned probably 100 cars from nearly every manufacturer in business between the '80s and today and while, sure, the CTSV was fast and the XJR is stately, and (honestly) the XR4Ti is probably even *more* unusual than the c900, nothing feels as much like home to me as a c900. The smell, the feel, the view - all of it. Such a great car.
Although I feel a little bad about not driving it more, the upside is that after a few weeks of other cars, coming back to the SPG feels that much more special. It invokes my first 8v sedan, my first Group 6 tuned SPG, and, hell, even my first real girlfriend. Hard to say which of those was most special, but they're all good memories carried by a great car.
So, for all of you who've never worked for the love of a c900, I'm sorry.
