RS nailed it, it seems that the ignition relay (IR) in the main (underhood)fuse block was the culprit. A stray neuron fired and reminded me that I had scavenged the fuses and relays that live in that space from prior Saab 900's I have owned. I walked up the ladder to the attic area above my garage (my parts store, if you know what I mean) and found a milk crate assemblage of such parts and, lo and behold, there was an ignition switch relay module-- or at least a reasonable facsimile thereof.
The fauloty relay removed from my '89 900s was Saab OEM, part # RBA 003 510-50, the relay resurrected from my parts store bears a Hella brand and has part number stamp 4RA 003 510-06 on the aluminum housing. They have the same pin/spade configuration and are comparable in size and composition, but the blades are narrower on the replacement.
While I attempted to dissect the relay from the '89 as RS had suggested above, I lost my nerve when attempting diassembly, opted to take a flier and see if the Lazarus relay would work.
I popped it in, started the car, all functions restored, but... it has been a sporadic issue that has arisen a few times, but not ALL the time I've driven in the last week or two. So I did the experiment: I reinserted the suspect OEM relay into the fuse box, started the car,and... drum roll please... No signals, no windows, dashboard lit up like a christmas tree.
I'm happy to take "yes" for an answer when these easy fixes come my way. You know I'll be back when next I have an "issue". Special thanks to RS, who was kind enough to give me a call this eve and walk me through this part of the dark art that is Saab 900 repair, care and feeding. RS, and others on the SaabNet site represent an amazing resource, I'm happy to be back in the Saab community. Thanks.
