Here's a puzzle for you diagnostic experts!
1993 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible - came back from shop with new A/C compressor & new larger amp alternator. Note: alternator amperage was increased due to engine stall when compressor engaged. All was well - for a few days. Then:
- after I came off the highway and stopped, subsequent acceleration would cause a sudden loss of power and motion, quickly recovered. It was like someone slammed on the brakes and then let them off.
- after 45 minutes on the highway, car refused to go faster than 55 MPH. A brief rest seemed to fix the issue.
- car began to stall more frequently. Now, every press of accelerator causes choking and sputtering. Car won't move faster than a crawl - then all of a sudden zoom! It's going normal. Until the next stop, at which point it's stalling again.
- this is not, apparently, happening when the mechanic drives the car. Either that or they're gaslighting me.
Here is a very hard-to-hear video of the issue. You can sorta hear the rumbling of the Saab's exhaust stop and start just below the road noise. https://youtu.be/SsYCcZl-4T4
I'm thinking that it might be one of these:
- fuel pump
- water in the gas (leaking tank)
- injectors
- something else
Areas of the car that have been touched recently are: replaced gas tank, replaced gasket (not head gasket, the one above that), and when the gas tank was replaced they mucked up the fuel sender, which is now sending 3/4 tank max (never goes to full).
Thanks for any help!
