Hello,
For the fuel smell I would check the filler neck back in the hatch area. Often small cracks develope there that allow fuel vaper to enter the car when parked overnight that clear out shortly after taking off.
As for the cold start problem double check for vacuum leaks. Is the oil dipstick red? If its yellow it may be wrong for the 8v. It is very possible if the car hasn't been run alot that the cis fuel system could be a little gummed up somewhere. I might try a strong fuel additive such as BG's 44k in a tank of gas this could also clean up any carbon build up on the valves. If the additive doesn't work I usually start by checking fuel injectors to make sure they are opening at the proper pressure and spraying nicely and not leaking. If you find an indie that does alot of cis cars (old porsche, mercedes etc) they may have the tool to check the injectors. And even new injectors does not mean working injectors. When we need to replace them we order extra's because they often are bad or clogged out of the box. A fuel pressure check can be very telling too. An improperly functioning "warm up regulator" or accumulator can really mess with pressure. Or as Landjet said you could send all the cis parts out and have them checked and corrected. Good Luck, Bernie
