Hi,
Been having trouble with the car starting fine when cold, but then stalling after a few minutes of idling. Then no start, until waiting an hour or two, and then it would fire back up and run fine for a few minutes and stall again (see recent post- this happened every time). Was initially thinking cps/ spark, but I finally got a pressure gage installed on the rail, and watched the fuel pressure go from nearly 40psi (starting fine at cold start, and running fine for a few minutes), and then slowly dwindle to approx 10psi, and the car dies.
So, I changed the fuel filter- same exact scenario- start, run fine, die. So, I changed the fuel pump cartridge with the Delphi brand, Part No FE0514.
In doing the swap, I did not use any of the misc parts that came with the kit. The pump that was in the car had a plastic barb that I crushed with pliers and fished out of the nylon fuel line, allowing me to save and use the nylon line. I just slipped this over the new brass barb, and secured it with a mini stainless clamp. The cartridge seemed to fit the “original” upper and lower rubber mount grommets fine. Put the pump assembly in car, jumpered fuse box 27 and 30 just for the heck of it, and (I’ll be GDM’D) the pump runs but I have no pressure at the rail. I then squeezed the return line at the regulator, and still no pressure… Blessed the car appropriately and thoroughly, and pulled the pump back out.
What I found was the canister had very little fuel in it, maybe a half an inch, although the fuel tank is approx ¼ full. It should be noted that I have changed several fuel pumps on different vehicles, including one on my’89 NA, and always found them to be plug and play.
So, as a last resort, I looked at the Bentley manual, which talks about the ejector valve on the side of the can, but does not really say how it works or how to trouble shoot it. Can anyone explain how this works- I’ve seen several posts theorizing why it is there, but none on how it actually works. Also, there are no marks on the trunk floor or tank to align with the cover of the pump assembly, but looking into the tank, it appears there is a slight depression in the bottom right side of the tank (orientation looking back to front of car) that would allow the ejector valve to sit in, but this is 180 degrees from what Bentley shows. It almost appears like the new pump never got fuel; do I need to prime this by filling the can before installing? Would a bad ejector valve not allow the can to fill to begin with?
If the check valve was bad in the supply line, I could understand poor starting, but unless this somehow closes completely- meaning it won’t allow any fuel to pass to the rail- I don’t see how this could be the issue.
Maybe the car is vapor locked? What did I fc up? Any suggestions- tx
