Difficult really isn't the right description - it's gross and annoying. If the car is rusty underneath getting the bolts out could be an issue unless you have impact tools, so I'd take a peek down there and see what's up. The later ABS cars involve a little slowdown getting the pinch bolt off the u-joint as the ABS system obstructs access, but it's not bad. Get the outer tie rods out (you should replace them) and then you get into the annoying & gross stuff. Wiggling the rack into the wheelwell, then dip one side under the car and shuffle it out, while ancient power steering fluid dumps all over you and everything you love. If you're good at this job, it's 90 minutes tops. If you're bad at it, probably half a day.
FWIW I recently replaced the rack on my '85, and after a lot of searching I found the best option was a seller on ebay called qeparts - they have a Maval rack (the best IMHO) for the best price. Great option - I would not consider any other reman for the c900, period.
