One of the best tricks I've found is to cut a combo open end wrench in half to disconnect (unscrew) the power steering lines (they are 16 and 18 mm, IIRC). As noted above, this is the most difficult part. A short, 3-inch wrench give you the clearance around the engine and transmission that is needed. The challenge then becomes getting the leverage to initially crack the line loose. I do this using my air hammer: fit the wrench, then give it one good shot and thereafter, its relatively easy to turn it the rest of the way out. You may have to hit it again, but the worst part is over.
The other thing is that you almost certainly need to remove the downpipe to do this. I hate touching the exhaust with a passion, but it is really necessary (IIRC). After you rotate the steering gear connection downward (180 degrees), use vise grips to turn the steering gear all the way in one direction to clear the tie rod on one side, then turn it all the way in the other direction to clear the other side.
