"So I'm thinking of buying one of these smart battery minder trickle chargers."
To my knowledge, a "battery minder" is quite different than a "trickle charger". The former only provides a charge when the battery voltage is below some threshold level. Conversely, a trickle charger continually provides a charge, even if the battery is full.
"Has anyone used one of these successfully without disconnecting the battery?"
I'm a big fan of the Dellran Battery Tender products (which represent a smart charger) and have used them for many years on my cars that don't get driven a lot. In response to your question, I have never disconnected any of my batteries and simply use the included alligator clips or, more typically, the ring-terminal quick disconnect plugs. (The obvious qualifier being that I disconnect the battery when I'm performing certain work on the car). For what it's worth, the last battery in my 1960 Austin-Healey lasted 11 years (no exaggeration) which I think was largely due to the fact that it was connected to a Battery Tender when not in use.
