Not sure what you mean by "Spade"? There should be a metal ring on the bottom end of the cable that is threaded on the inside and knurled on the outside ("big nut"?). That threaded/knurled ring is part of the speedometer cable and should not still be on the transmission if the cable is on the workbench. It seems that maybe the previous owner just yanked the cable off without unscrewing that ring? Am I reading your post right? The inner part of the cable assembly that spins should be square on the bottom end so it can insert into the speedometer driver which has a corresponding square bore (about 2 mm on each side). If the cable was indeed yanked off you'll need to get a new one or fix the old one. If that knurled ring is still on the transmission then follow up here for directions on how to proceed.
