If there is a metal ring about 20 mm across with fine threads on it's inside floating on the cable and the tip of the inner cable is square shaped then the cable is OK. The insertion point is on the driver's side at the back of the transmission. Where the left axle assembly enters the transmission there is a round alloy flange about 100 mm in diameter secured to the main case with six bolts. Near the top of that flange is where the cable attaches. If you think of the flange as a clock then the speedometer driver to which the cable attaches will be at approximately 2 o'clock. The speedometer driver mechanism is held into that flange with a bent piece of sheet metal that's secured under one of the six bolts. You should be able to see or at least feel the finely threaded hub that the ring screws onto. In the center of that hub there is a small square hole for the inner cable. Slip the square end of the inner cable in and then screw the threaded ring down tight. You may have to jiggle the cable a bit to get the square end to fully insert, you should not have to force the threaded ring down. If needed, I can probably post a photo here.
