Charles, Popping out of gear (any gear) will occur if it is not fully engaged in the first place. That's generally caused by a problem with the gear selecting mechanism, anywhere between the shift knob and the actual gearbox. The first thing to check for is tearing of the rubber shift control coupling at the gearbox. The separating or tearing of the rubber can be hard to observe in place. Get under the car or lean over the fender in order to have a clear view of the coupling and have someone shift it in and out of gears while you watch for the rubber part to spread open. It only needs to spread a small amount so can be difficult to observe.
After that you should check the shift linkage adjustment, if it's off that can prevent full engagement of certain gears. The procedure requires placing the unit in third gear, loosening the clamp on the rubber coupling and placing two pins which position the components before tightening the coupling clamp (consult the manual for details). Also looseness of the shifter box where it's bolted to the floor or any other looseness anywhere throughout the shift mechanism will cause engagement problems.
Some of the later cars had a problem with the shift control rod actually breaking at the base of the shift lever (inside the shifter box). As the crack develops proper gear selection becomes difficult. Problems with the poppet ball, like a weakened spring, can cause sudden gear disengagement but that's not usually confined to just one gear.
