That's a problem. You should not be able to just lift the spacer ring out without depressing the clutch. Does the disc move freely with the flywheel stationary? Most likely something is jammed between the flywheel and pressure plate, the obvious suspect being the disc. Is it in backwards or is it maybe not the disc that belongs with this clutch or is it off center and pinched between the flywheel and pressure plate? If much torque was required to run in the cover bolts that suggests that something was pressing the plate back. If the disc was in backwards that would explain this but I don't think there is enough clearance to install it backwards?
