There are two diaphragm compression rings, the later version is a bit thicker for later clutches (I don't know when the switch occurred). You may be victim of that. I managed to find both on eBay. I am presuming the clutch is installed with the gearbox and engine mated & in the car. I have read that you can drive pennies or other discs or wedges between the diaphragm spring and the pressure plate shell, never had to try it fortunately I once had to compress the diaphragm spring before installing a clutch, made a jig from plywood with a hole, a bolt through the hole & nut with progressive larger washers to compress the spring until I could get the ring in place.
