A worn out inner driver or tripod does not cause a hum it causes a vibration. If you have a torn inner driver boot and no vibration then just install a new boot and fresh grease. If you do have a worn out inner driver or tripod then just replacing those parts is the way to go. A replacement axle will usually include a new tripod but not the inner driver and you can buy the tripod and easily install it on your original axle.
It's always hard to convey the sound you are hearing in text but if your SPG has it's original transmission with 210,000 miles on it it's possible that the "hum" is due to worn out pinion (or other internal) bearings. You can replace the small ball bearing that supports the inner driver and that might be the cause of the noise but servicing other bearings requires removing and rebuilding the transmission.
