I have to rant, here- the tapered pin idea is just nuts, from an engineering standpoint.
The shift coupling's so thin that it usually deforms to the size of the shift rod,
and then if the nut ever loosens, starts to move and wear.
So you tighten it down, and it stays put for a bit, but eventually loosens,
since just the nut's holding it down.
So you tighten it some more.
But this time, it doesn't stay very long, so now you try to replace it.
No dice- the taper is wedged into the shaft, and there's no easy way to
get a solid hit on it, NOT that you really want to HIT THE SHIFT SELECTOR SHAFT VERY HARD!
Ok, thanks, I just needed to rant. There are lots of oddball things that make
us love these cars for all sorts of perverse reasons, but this, for me, is not one of them.
t
yes, I know, I'll go take my pills....
