Several things I have learned, living in a cool, damp environment:
Don't enclose it. If you toss a tarp over it, water will condense
at the top of the tarp, and drip down on it.
If you can SEAL it, that works- a big plastic bin is good,
especially if you can seal it up on a dry day, with dessicant.
Use engine fogger or similar preservation oil on the cylinders,
then close them to keep mice out. Likewise, close
up oil pans, etc. I found a mouse nest in a transmission
case once- insane that they'd build there, but it would have
made a mess if it'd had gears in it.
Oil sticks well to things- if you can get them coated, they
really don't rust IF it's a 'coating' or 'fogging' oil.
Some oils aren't very good at resisting rust, but engine
oil seems to be.
Check on things every so often. Re: mice!
I too have pulled apart engines from cars that were so rusty that the
frame broke apart 30 years ago- and the insides of the engines
had no rust on anything that was closed.
