I like the idea of converting the car to the distributor-mounted Hall sensor and in fact I've rigged up an adapter cable to allow me to plug in a spare turbo distributor if I need it. I like having the either/or option.
But yep, getting to the CPS is somewhat of a PITA. That picture that I posted was on the rebound side of a rebuild I did on my 92 900S two years ago. Transmission rebuild, head resurfacing, new steering rack, new bushings. It was really thorough. And I thought during reassembly that it would be a great idea to get a jump on a future CPS fail by splicing in a new Hall sensor into this location. Turned out that the replacement didn't work correctly and I had to dive back into this area (now with everything installed back in the car) and splice the original Hall sensor piece back into the original wiring.
Jack up the car front comfortably high and place it down on jackstands. Remove the exhaust downpipe (this helps tremendously by freeing up some critical room). Secure and arrange really good illumination. And then just go slow and steady. Remove the pulley, maneuver to unscrew the sensor bracket and extract that wiring length with the sensor at the end.
It involves some contortion and zen mind status but it's do-able.
Restoring the original sensor allowed me to fire up the car within the first half-second of cranking once everything was reassembled. I still want to figure out if/how that replacement sensor failed.
Good luck.
