I like that idea of looking under the car at the shield to see if it was compromised. The one that was melted on the vehicle, you couldn't tell from the shield as they actually replaced it, so it covered up the hole it made in the "transmission tunnel"......so, until I was able to remove the automatic shifter console and get ready for the 5 speed shift shaft, it was really hidden from view.
So, left undisturbed, the heat shield could show signs of degradation, now that they are NLA, it's more likely you would see a home made gizmo to deflect heat. If one of those is installed, I would guess the probability of heat affected zones would have on melting the wires together.
Let's hope it's just a loose ground that you find in the array of wiring.
