The "clutch tool" doesn't really depress the spring loaded fingers of the pressure plate by itself. It is only a round metal spacer ring I remember only two methods which worked for me on my 85 900. One needs to have all of the clutch fingers held depressed in order to have the room to remove the thrust bearing and slave cylinder.
Method 1. Re-bleed the slave cylinder and line via the bleed fitting on the top side of the slave cylinder as you would with brakes. If the clutch comes to life, then have someone depress the clutch while inserting the clutch tool (it is nothing but a round spacer metal coil) or an old spark plug wire between each finger and pressure plate body (old school method)
Method 2....No need to bleed. Push on each finger one at a time with an end of a heavy screw driver and insert the spark plug wire or tool between the finger and pressure plate body while going around the clutch plate.
Please note you will have to have the clutch plate depressed with the spark plug spacer or tool spacer if you change out the clutch plate.
Please let me know if you have a question. Done it a couple of times in the past.
