Possible failure cause - classic 900 ABS Posted by DET17 [Email] (#1254) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DET17) on Sun, 28 Nov 2021 04:15:57 In Reply to: classic 900 ABS, jwatkinsaz [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 23 Nov 2021 09:25:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
OK, I'll share my experience.
My 91 C900 'vert when I took ownership, would literally try to "change ends" when hard braking was performed. I had completely rebuilt the brakes and rotors at all corners, yet this persisted. The only piece of the system left which I suspected was the ABS hydraulic brake controller (under the hood). My son was able to source one from a Pullapart location in Charlotte NC. We replaced the complete assembly (tedious by not very difficult), then bled the brakes following the maintenance procedure. After this replacement, the car resumed OE braking capabilities with no more "changing ends" behavior..... she stops perfectly straight now.
What I have read is that when well meaning folks push the caliper pistons back into their home position (for a full thickness new pad install) this fluid can contaminate the ABS unit. One must never flow that brake fluid backwards, is what I have read several times. I can only suspect the PO's of my car had such brake work done and contaminated the ABS unit which caused it to malfunction. The OEM requires you to bleed the caliper fluid out the bleeder into a container, rather than pushing it backward toward the ABS module.
I'll suggest you find a low mile donor replacement for said ABS unit. Good luck!
