If you're using a tach by connecting it to the posts on the coil I don't see how it wouldn't work. I see Harbor Freight offers an LCD multimeter with tach, and it uses a spark plug wire inductor for detection. Being digital right there isn't going to give you very good real time data, and how does it know it's on a 4 cylinder unless you set the dial for that...
I say get a good old fashioned dwell meter on ebay. There's a lot available. Probably get a timing light too.
