There may have been some "user error" in previous attempts. Like you, I thought we are making and breaking an electrical field, of course it should work. But it didn't.
I tried again after reading your post. (And re-reading the manual and checking a coil that was off the car to be sure where + was) Now I am getting signal on the meter. However, I don't think I am getting a good readings. At idle it is showing 600 rpm on one car and 700 rpm on a different car. (And yes, I have it in the 4 cylinder position.) My tach has a low and high setting. On the low setting, I am getting the readings mentioned above. On the high setting I am sure it is reading too low. I rev the heck out of the engine and it says maybe 2000 RPM.
The Harbor Freight unit is model Centec 95670 which is still listed on their website. It would be nice if I could get the Harbor Freight unit to work on my Classics and also on my 9-3.
