Also worth mentioning, there are two types of seal, presumably from different years of SS170PSS compressor. The running change may correspond to the valves being on the hoses or on the compressor body, but I'm not sure about that. You may have to take yours apart to see which seal type you have.
Later compressors had the valves on the compressor body, I believe. Anyways, later compressors had the carbon seals, which are more durable and easier to DIY replace. Earlier compressors had a double lip seal. The hard part about the double lip seal is getting the shaft through it without tearing the rubber. IIRC someone did it by carefully wrapping the threaded portion of the shaft with tape. The build thread on Saab Central with all the pictures is a later carbon seal type.
Mine's from 1990, is the carbon seal type, and I rebuilt it myself with relative ease. I got my seal kit and an oring kit at Autozone, but the kits did not come with some 8mm aluminum crush washers that were also necessary to seal the bolts. I got those from a Ducati guy on evilbay. Mine's been holding a charge for 5 or 6 years now and blows nice and cold on even the hottest days. I'm really pleased with it. If I can find the part numbers for the seal kits, I will post them.
