Brake booster fail and idle control

I I have a suspect brake booster on my '89 900T. Symptoms include un-boosted braking and idle hunting, the latter most likely due to associated vacuum leak. I was fortunate enough to obtain a used booster from Al Huseman but have not yet had the time to install. In the meantime, I've grown accustomed to driving with, essentially, manual braking but the idle surging/hunting annoys the f$%k out of me, especially in stop-and-go traffic.
So I had what I thought was a brilliant idea: Until I have the time needed to R&R the booster itself, why not just disconnect and cap the vacuum hose going to the booster in the interim?
The result is that the motor no longer hunts for idle-- instead, it surges upon startup to a steady 2300 - 3000 rpm idle. Huzzah???
WTF have I done?
