my throwout bearing on my '88 is starting to squeak/squeal but it doesnt groan per se. as soon as you let the clutch pedal out in neutral you'll hear the bearing noise. even a new one gives a perceptible low hum since its now spinning.
i've never heard a groaning but from what you're describing it must be one of the other parts - pressure plate, slave cylinder, pedal mechanism.
you might want to consider replacing all affordable parts.
and if getting a new clutch disc you should get the flywheel resurfaced too as you prolly know....
