Sometimes, It DOES Go Well 2 Saabers Like This Post! Posted by eric in vermont [Email] (#2058) [Profile/Gallery] (more from eric in vermont) on Sat, 15 Jul 2023 10:21:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I recently posted about replacing the dash lights in my '93 Convertible and dropping one of the bulb holders down into the dash. What should have been a 15 minute job took a couple of hot, sweaty, frustrating hours...
My middle son Josh bought his first Saab a month or so ago, a very clean '92 3 door, non-turbo. He's thrilled with it! He stopped by yesterday and said "dad, how about we change out the dash lights?" He liked my fancy blue LEDs and I had spares.
So we did and had it done in 15 minutes- no dropped bulb holders.
Then he said "how about we troubleshoot the horn?" So we did and within 5 minutes I saw the problem- the horn relay was missing. My guess is that someone had a bad relay and moved the horn one over to something more important. I had a few new standard relays on the shelf, popped one in, and that fixed that.
Next, he said "well, there's also my windshield washer pump." That took a bit longer. We pulled the plastic reservoir out, drained it, then removed the pump. I put a voltmeter on the wiring and no 12VDC. Then we applied 12VDC to the pump and off it went. Within a few minutes, I was pretty sure it was in the switch. So we pulled that out of the column. With the help of the Bentley schematic, we jumped across the correct switch terminals and the pump along with the headlight wipers immediately ran. If you know these switches, there's a little slot in which you can see the washer contacts. I used a little emery cloth on a screwdriver blade to clean the contacts, then some contact cleaner, then a little pair of pliers to bend the contacts to get, well, a little better contact. That fixed it! Back together in a few minutes! And I didn't have to take the switch apart, which involves drilling out the little plastic tabs that hold it together.
All told, I bet it was an hour to fix all three and boy was he happy! He drove off blowing the horn and running the washer!
So sometimes, auto mechanics DOES go well!
