I had to open my big mouth with my previous post...
Said son came over this afternoon to work on a project in my barn. I asked him how the Saab was running and he said "there's a new noise." I taught him well- listen to the car. Noises don't get better.
He started it for me and I didn't hear anything unusual. Until he turned the wheel. Big groan from the power steering system. I pulled the cap and the fluid was low... and it was white and foamy. Probably not good. I couldn't immediately see a leak anywhere.
He borrowed my truck to move his project and left the car with me, so I'll have a look tomorrow. A couple of questions:
1. He's only had the car a short time, so we don't know the history, other than it wasn't driven much in the last few years. I'm assuming the fluid is low and the pump is cavitating and the remaining fluid is full of air. Is that reasonable?
2. I'd like to purge the system of the old crappy fluid. How do I do that without running the pump dry?
3. What fluid do I use for replacement? I searched the archives and don't see a consensus. Some say regular Power Steering Fluid, others say Power Steering Fluid with stop-leak additives, others say Dextron II or III ATF, and someone recommended the fancy Pentosin CHF 11S stuff (I happen to have a new liter of that on the shelf from the infamous never-ending problem era of Audi TT ownership, which I'd just as soon forget).
Thanks in advance for recommendations!
