I just watched the YouTube video of the guy rebuilding the rack and correcting the problem seal. It's rather lengthy, so I'll save you some time. The incorrect seal is the seal that goes on the pinion shaft and the correct seal according to him is 27mm x 37mm x 7mm and he got it from Amazon.
And according to a comment on the video, the REASON is that the majority of rebuild kits were for the EARLY aluminum housing racks, which wore out rather quickly. These would probably require sleeving as part of the rebuild. The later racks used cast iron housings to fix the problem and they're unlikely to wear such that they need to be resleeved, so they could be rebuilt in a home shop. The cast iron housing resulted in a slightly different size seal. I don't know the years for early vs late.
Note that the video has some bad practices- the worst is that at the end, the pinion would slip a tooth on the rack when he moved the steering wheel with the car off. Since it didn't do it when the car was running, he thought it was okay. Very scary to me! I think the pinion tension adjustment was too loose.
Anyway, it will be interesting if Carlson comes up with the same correct seal number.
