There is no battery warning light. it is a light for the alternator. It indicates if the alternator is charging or not.
When you turn the ignition to ON and you haven't started the car yet, the alternator light will come on to tell you it is not charging. When you start the car, it might stay on but it should shut off quickly to let you know it is charging the battery.
Putting your meter on the alternator would only tell you it is sending out 12V but the battery might not be receiving it.
always check for a proper ground FIRST when something electrical does not work.
