Yep, without an alternator ground you'll get no alternator output at all. The general premise with charging system warning lights is that whenever there is a significant imbalance between battery voltage and charging voltage (alternator output) the light illuminates signifying that either the battery or the alternator has gone on vacation. In most old-timey cars that's why the light goes on briefly when you start the car, it takes a few seconds for the alternator output to catch up to battery output.
So it seems like maybe your light is burnt out or disconnected but what are the chances of that in a thirty year old car with a primitive, flexible instrument panel circuit board?
With a fully charged battery see if the light comes on for a few seconds when starting as it should.
